The manuscript is a Miscellany of Greek texts written in England in the 17th century, containing mainly transcriptions from manuscripts held in Cambridge and Oxford, written at various times by Patrick Young (1584-1652), scholar and Royal librarian. The manuscript is formed of different parts. Although the quire structure of the codex is difficult to reconstruct, given the tight sewing, and the conditions of the manuscript, the various parts are distinguishable by the difference in texts, script, paper (watermarks and dimensions of the leaves). The first leaves of the different parts are often darker than the rest; originally they were probably preserved independently, for a time. The first part (ff. 1-27) contains the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, a pseudepigraphic work, which purportedly contains the deathbed exhortations of the twelve sons of Jacob. It was copied from MS Cambridge, University Library, Ff.1.24 . Part II (ff. 28-78) also contains a text copied from MS CUL Ff.1.24, the so-called Libellus memorialis (or Notebook of Josephus, or Hypomnestikon), copied by an anonymous scribe and Patrick Young. By his hand was also written the text of part VI (ff. 95-111), which he signed in 1636, in Sherborne, Dorset. Eleven years later, in August and September 1647, Patrick Young copied the texts in part VII of the manuscript (ff. 112-183), Eusebius' Onomasticon and a Lexicon of the Scriptures, in Broomfield, Essex. In the third part (ff. [78a]-[78f]), formed by leaves of smaller dimension, there is a portion of book 14 of Flavius Josephus' Antiquitates Judaicae copied from a manuscript of Isaac Vossius. This same excerpt from this work is contained also in a paper bifolium, which has been folded and bound at the end of the manuscript. Part IV (ff. [78g]-[81], 82) contains the table of contents of the Libellus memorialis, copied in part II: the numbers of folios in the index refer to it. The leaves forming this part are in disorder (the correct sequence is [80], [81], [78g], [79], 82), due to the fact that the binion formed by ff. [78g]-[81] was sewn in the manuscript folded the opposite way. Dr Erika Elia

Codex 1 + 197 + 1 ca. 310 ca. 200-205 Modern foliation in ink, partially integrated in pencil, with a series of unnumbered of partially numbered leaves: ff. i + 1:1-1:78 + [78a]-[78g] + [79]-[81] + 82-83 + pp. 84-[93] + ff. 94-116, [116a], 117-197 + [ii]. Between ff. 197 and f. [ii] has been bound a bifolium (see Accompanying Material).

The quires have been sewn very tight, and the condition of the manuscript does not permit a full investigation of the collation. It has been possible to observe the structure of only a few of the quires.

The leaves have not been trimmed, therefore edges are curled, and damaged. The book block is almost detached from the spine. The first few leaves are damaged and fragile.

On the left pastedown are written, in brown ink, the old marks G.8 and 293, and the present shelfmark, O.4.24; on the same leaf, in the centre, are written the name of the former owner and donor R. Gale. and an older shelfmark, which was erased, O.4.34.

On f. i recto there are various notes in Latin, in brown ink, about the contents of the manuscript, as well as the old mark G.8. A note in brown ink signed by E. Bernard was erased: April 5, 1677. Borrowed then of Dr Gale Photii Lexicon in Ms Gr. promise to return upon demand. Edward Bernard.

The cover is damaged near the edges; the left board is rigidly curled upwards.

A bifolium has been sewn, folded in two, between ff. 197 and [ii]; it contains another copy of Flavius Josephus, Antiquitates Judaicae, excerpt from Book 14, copied from a codex of Isaac Vossius (ff. [78a]r-[78f]v), copied by a hand datable in the 17th c.

The box containing the manuscript also holds two small paper fragments from f. 1.

The manuscipt was owned by Gale, Thomas, 1635?-1702 Thomas Gale (1635/1636-1702) , Regius professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, High Master of St Paul's School and Dean of York. It appears among Thomas Gale's Greek manuscripts in E. Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ, Oxoniæ 1697, p. 186, where it appears as 10 items, no. 5882 (48)-5891 (57).

It was donated by Roger Gale Gale, Roger, 1672-1744 in 1738. On the lower part of the left pastedown is pasted the Trinity College bookplate; on ff. i recto, f. 1r, and on a final added bifolium there are stamps of Trinity College Library Description (2021) draws partly on M. Horizontal catchwords by the scribe, written in the lower margin, right, of each leaf recto and verso. A single column of 28 lines ( ca. 295 ca. 170 ). The scribe left blank a column ( 40 ) to the left of each folio recto or verso for annotations, with the text occupying all the remaining space.

ff. 1r-27v Hand A: the text has been written in a minuscule script slightly slanting to the right, regular in size, characterized by small decorative hooks at the ends of uprights. The script is similar to that of Patrick Young and can be dated to the 17th c.

The scribe also wrote notes in the margins.

The text is written in a brown ink.

On ff. 28r-59v the scribe wrote signatures, formed by letters of the Latin alphabet from A to D, in the lower margin of the first leaf of each quire. On ff. 28r-59v there are horizontal catchwords by the scribe, written in the lower margin, right, of the verso of each leaf. On ff. 60r-78v there are horizontal catchwords by the scribe, written in the lower margin, right, of each leaf recto and verso. A single column of 36-41 lines. ca. 230 ca. 110

ff. 28r-59v Hand B: a minuscule script slanting to the right, characterized by a tendency to prolong uprights and oblique strokes. The script can be dated to the 17th c.

The text is written in a light brown ink.

ff. 60r-78v Hand C: Patrick Young (1584-1652) Young, Patrick, 1584-1652 (for the identification see M. R. James, The Western Manuscripts in the Library of Trinity College Cambridge, vol. 3, Cambridge 1902, p. 274; the script is the same as in other manuscripts written by Young, as, for example, London, British Library, Harley 7522 B ), in a minuscule script, slightly slanting to the right, flowing, regular in size, characterised by contrast between thin and thick strokes and small flourishing tails at the end of some vertical and oblique strokes (see e.g. rho, csi, beta, zeta, eta). Accents are not always present nor are breathings.

The scribe wrote also notes in the margins.

This part of the manuscript was copied in the 17th century, as suggested by the scripts and the watermarks. Since part of the text was written Patrick Young, and that the same watermark Crozier recurs in part VI of the manuscript, copied by Patrick Young in 1636, it is probable that this part was also copied around this date. This part of the manuscript was copied by Patrick Young, who completed the copy of Eusebius' Onomasticon on 14th August 1647, and of the Lexicon of The Scriptures on 13th September of the same year, in both cases in Broomfield (see Colophon). ff. 184r-190v, 192r-195r Hand H: the text has been written in a minuscule script slightly slanting to the right, regular in size, characterized by small decorative hooks at the ends of uprights. The script is similar to that of Patrick Young and can be dated to the 17th c.

This part of the manuscript was copied partly by Patrick Young. Since the paper contains the watermark ( Two columns) which is present also in part VII of the manuscript, which was copied by Young in 1647, it is probable that part VIII was also copied around this date.
